Headaches are often a symptom of an underlying condition that puts pressure on your head. Pain in different spots of your head can indicate what kind of headache you’ve got and what the underlying cause could be.

Understanding your headache can help you seek appropriate treatment and relieve yourself of the unnecessary pain. Keep reading to learn more about the different types of headaches and their treatments.

Types of Headaches

You often don’t realize that the headache you’re feeling may differ from the headache you had earlier. Sometimes, all of them seem alike when they’re actually quite different. Depending on the cause and the location of your headache, it can be classified into the following categories:

Tension Headache

This feels like a tight band around your head, and the pain it causes usually is mild to moderate. Tension headache is primarily due to undue stress that your body may be going through, perhaps from a lack of sleep, poor diet, bad posture, pressure at work, etc.

Migraine

This headache is usually felt on one side of the head, and it usually is very intense. Often paired with other symptoms like nausea (with or without vomiting) or pulsating head, a migraine attack can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. It can get so bad that it disrupts your daily life.

Cluster Headache

Much like migraines, cluster headaches are also very intense. They’re felt behind one eye or one side of the head and are paired with pink eyes and nasal discharge. These attacks often last for months and may require medical assistance.

Sinus Headache

Sinus issues can often cause excessive liquids in the nasal pathway and cause your ears to feel heavy. Your face may also swell as a result. All the extra fluid in the region can put a strain on your head, causing a sinus headache. It is felt on different parts of the face and certain spots o the head.

Hypertension Headache

When your blood pressure spikes suddenly, it can put pressure on your head. Hypertensive crises can cause excruciating headaches and require immediate medical attention.

TMJ Headache

It often feels like a tension headache, but TMJ headache is actually for entirely different reasons. The muscles that run along your cheeks and jaw often become strained and tight, causing a headache. While it may go away on its own, you can relieve it using the techniques mentioned in the next section.
