How Long Do Migraines Usually Last?

Migraines can be debilitating and may cause severe disabling headaches lasting from 4 hours to 2 days. Around 10 million people between the ages of 15 and 69 suffer from migraines. You can feel the migraine onset based on its stage progression. There are five stages of migraines progression called the warning phase, the aura phase, the headache phase, the resolution phase, and finally, the recovery phase.

In this brief guide, we’ll discuss what migraines are, how long they last, and some treatment measures:

The Warning Phase

In this phase, you may crave certain foods, fatigue, or anxiety over something. These symptoms can last around an hour to a day, depending upon the severity of your migraine attack.

The Aura Stage

This stage is accompanied by neurological symptoms of seeing flashes, sparks, dark spots, and zigzag lines in your vision. You may also feel numbness and weakness in your body, causing you to sit down or lay down to rest. In severe cases, you may also experience difficulty in speech and hearing. These symptoms can last from five minutes to an hour.

The Migraine Headache

Once you start experiencing the full effects of the migraine headache, you may also be nauseous, lightheaded, and have difficulties with your vision. This state can also make you sensitive to light and hearing. And exposure to harsh lighting and loud noises can exacerbate your headache. This state can last from a few hours to a few days.

The Resolution Stage

In this stage, you may try to alleviate the symptoms by sleeping. For some people sleeping for a few hours does the trick. After sleeping, you’ll slowly feel your symptoms and fatigue wearing off. However, feeling moody, weak, and dizzy is still normal.

The Recovery Phase

In this phase, you might feel normal but weak. You can also take over-the-counter medicines to feel better as the symptoms occur.
